Secret Safe is a gossip-based roleplay that takes place primarily in Chicago, Illinois and is based loosely around the rivalry between the Landsburg Woodchucks (the local public school) and the Masterson Sharks (the elite private school). The main theme of the game is based around the secretive lives of the teenagers in the city, and a website called Secret Safe that has a passion for publishing user-submitted gossip.
Here are a few quick tips on how to use the extended profiles, as well as the mini-profiles found with each post. New tips will be posted as needed.
The current dimensions on the avatars are 200x350. This more than likely won't change, unless we have an overhaul of the skin itself. If you would like one to be made for you by another player, feel free to post in the graphic request forum.
The custom profile fields that you see under the avatars can be edited under the "Edit Profile Info" link found under My Controls. The limit on the quote is 350 characters, but may be raised in the future. It can be song lyrics or anything you wish. You can also add in the links for quick access to your application, shipper and phone.
To find MP3s for your profile, I personally search on Bee MP3 to find them, but it can be a little tricky as a lot of files are mis-labeled. To upload one of your own, we suggest using FileDen. There is no restriction to the type of song you choose, it's all up to you and your character.
A user title is something to help people know a bit about your character at first glance. Think of it like a character type, or a trope. Are you 'the bad boy', or 'the wannabe jock'? Sometimes, it will be hard to come up with what 'stereotype' your character fits into, and in case of emergency, the staff will always be willing to help, as will your fellow players, so don't hesitate to ask around for some pointers.
User titles can be changed from time to time, especially if the staff feels that your former title doesn't fit the direction your character has taken. In situations such as these, you will receive a PM about it, and the discussion can begin there. Staff will never, ever change your user title without coming to an agreement with you first.
This one is a little complicated, as we don't really ask a yearly income for all the characters. This will give you a general guide to the tax brackets around Secret Safe, and try to figure out where your character will fit in proper. Names are listed in order of highest net worth to lowest.
25 Billion and up: The Darlings, (60-70); The Knights (40-50)
1 to 25 Billion: The Zahirs (3); The Hawthornes (2.5)
100 Million to 1 Billion: The Crawfords (650); The Mastersons (625); The Greysons (600); The Krausses (575); The Adamses (200)
1 to 99 Million: The Schroders (30); The Buchanans (27.5); The Larkins (25)
You may have realized that we have two cboxes. One is on the sidebar -- here you can talk out of character and get to know your fellow players, as well as come up with some plots or just shoot the shit -- and the second is located at the bottom of the site under a toggle bar -- here your posts are meant to be in character.
The In Character Chat -- commonly known among members as IC Cbox, or ICbox, is simple and easy to use. In this box, you're typing as though one of your characters is speaking rather than yourself. Out-of-character comments are allowed but should be clearly marked that way with the appropriate marks (which you can find in the rules). When signing up for your ICbox name, use your character's first and last name with proper capitalization; icons (used in the email/url field) are not mandatory, but they are encouraged.
When it comes to actual writing, there's only a few things to keep in mind. There's no need to add quotations when your character speaks, but you will need to employ "action marks". These vary from player to player, some using *this* or -this- or even :: this :: but it's up to you. However, is reserved for In Character text messages. While we do not have a specific limit on the length of your ICbox posts, please keep them short, resorting only to paragraphs when needed.
For a quick recap, we'll give you a little demonstration. The bolded text will denote instructions/information.
Ariel Darling: :: Heads into the Bean. :: A typical introduction, as the Coffee Bean tends to be the center hub of ICbox activity.
Gaston Schroder: -offers a friendly wave to Ariel.- Hey, how's it going? Different action brackets, but still the same gist, and a little bit of dialogue.
Katie Buchanan: :: Sends a text to Gaston. :: And an example of a text message.
There are various other things used, such as italics when people are speaking other languages (we don't all speak them, so it makes it easier than letting Google Translate butcher it) and the occasional strikethrough when adding something out of character. It's all relatively easy, and picked up on even easier when watching the rest of the player.
Canon names are always negotiable, though we prefer to keep the last name as they're listed, if only to keep the staff from having to re-arrange the heavily coded canon list. Middle names are always up to the player, and only in the case of canons with siblings will we usually deny a first name change.
Can I change a canon's face?
We're always willing to allow people to change the faces of canon characters, though keep in mind, most faces were chosen for a specific reason in mind. Try not to stray too far from the original "visual concept" of the canon when picking a new face or speak to an admin about the change you'd like to make.
Can I change a canon's gender/school/grade?
Sadly, no. We spent a lot of time working out the ratios between schools, genders and grades, and will not be allowing people to change any of these factors. We do always allow original characters, so feel free to make one that more suits your desired character!
